Cody Johnson Brings Us to Texas With ‘Banks of the Trinity’ Release

After teasing us with singles since he released I Want You back in April, Cody Johnson has officially released his ninth studio album, Banks Of The Trinity on June 26.

Throughout the 16 track album, it has the similar Cody Johnson sound that every true and authentic country fan can’t get enough of.

We got quite a few glimpses into the album with singles like I Want You, Fool Proof featuring Brothers Osborne, Hello Lonesome, Horseback, Take Me Back (Leave Me There) and Shoot The Bull.

Out of six singles, Take Me Back (Leave Me There) seems like a new sounding song for Cody. It stills has the drums, guitar, with a small dose of the steel guitar, but it definitely sounds like CoJo was trying to branch out a bit.

The next single that stuck out to me was Fool Proof. I might be biased because I’m a huge fan of Brothers Osborne, but the song was catchy and jam-packed with clever lyrics.

The title track, Banks Of The Trinity is beautifully written with very descriptive lyrics that give you a good glimpse of the setting. The setting being Johnson’s hometown of Trinity County, Texas.

Another collaboration that was on the album was Luke Combs on Shoot The Bull. This song was different. It reminded me a lot of The Conversation, a song by Hank Williams Jr featuring Waylon Jennings. Combs opens up the song and starts asking questions about Johnson’s way of Texas living and Johnson returns questions too.

Johnson, to me, definitely is a really fun artist to listen to when he writes more upbeat and fun tracks and Shoot The Bull was the perfect example. The lyrics contain beer, rodeos, jukeboxes and bull riding.

Might sound cliche, but whatever.

Following Shoot The Bull is Cricket On A Hook is another fun and upbeat song just talking about fishing and beer. It also contains a fiddle, making for a perfect summer song.

The album closes out with Yippy Ty Oh Hey Hey, a track stripped of all post-production. It is strictly Cody strumming on his guitar and it puts his voice on full display.

There are definitely a good handful of songs from this album that will be in my shuffle this summer for sure.
