Dexter and The Moonrocks, the pioneers of their self-dubbed “Western Space Grunge” genre, are on a tear. They’ve been on a roll since their last single, Sad in Carolina, which landed on the alternative radio chart with giants like Linkin Park, Sum 41 and Jack White. The Moonrocks made a statement with their debut EP, Western Space Grunge, which showed off their fuzz-heavy guitar riffs, booming rhythm section, and the perfect balance of angst and melancholy that brings together the fanbases of rock and country.
The group just released a live cover of Tyler Childers’ Messed Up Kid. Childers is an absolute force in the country music scene, and I’m not going to lie, I was quite surprised that Dexter and The Moonrocks covered this track. That surprise, turns out, was a very pleasant one. Their unique take on this tune features that classic Moonrock cosmic-grunge sound with a foundation of earthy, Western swing. The production is fantastic and, as a live single, turned out very good.
The band is currently on tour which runs through December, and from the looks of concert footage, their shows are absolutely wild. Their genre-defying sound, which can only be described as a melting pot of grunge and country, is such a unique and cool style that many new fans would latch on to. Go give Dexter and The Moonrock’s new live rendition of Tyler Childers’ Messed Up Kid a listen now!
