Nashville country artist David Payne dropped his latest single, “Memory Lane,” early last month. The heartache track follows “Ten in Tennessee,” and one thing’s for sure: both songs deserve millions of streams.
With radio-friendly production (co-led by Taylor Bialy and ProdByDom) that walks a thin line between country and electropop, “Memory Lane” is a hard-hitting breakup song that resonates on multiple levels. In it, Payne recounts a nostalgic truck ride through his ex’s neck of the woods. Through personal lyrics, co-written by Payne, Sean Michael Murray, and Taylor Bialy, Payne captures the complex emotions of a breakup by switching back and forth between wanting to forget his former girlfriend and intentionally reminding himself about her.
There have been a lot of indie heartbreak country songs this summer, and “Memory Lane” is one of the best. With a soul-bearing message and infectious hook, it’s sure to get stuck in listeners’ heads for days. As a follow-up to “Ten in Tennessee,” another undeniable banger, the song is sure to elevate Payne’s status as one of Nashville’s strongest up-and-comers.
