It’s been an industrious season for singer-songwriter Matt Roy. On August 25, The Big Machine signee dropped his second independent single, “Mary & Me.” He’s also a credited writer on some of the biggest country music songs this year, including titles by Ashley Cooke and Morgan Wallen.
“Mary & Me” holds up with the best of them. As one of Roy’s few original releases, it shines with all of his best artistic qualities: masterful storytelling, lyrics that fit together like nuts and bolts, and his unique, heartland rock brand of modern country. In it, he chronicles the highs and lows of a love story with the one that got away.
As an upbeat, love-lost country-rock anthem, “Mary & Me” brings to mind classic heartbreak tracks like Bruce Springsteen’s “Bobby Jean” or “Hungry Heart.” In that vein, with every release, Roy continues to expertly weld genres together for a sound that will appeal to rock, Americana, and country fans alike. It’s one of the strongest releases of the year. Check it out below:
