Singer-songwriter J.R. Carroll has released a full-band rendition of one of his most popular tracks entitled “Red Fern.” Carroll, who is also a member of Zach Bryan’s supporting band, put out an EP in December of 2020 including a song called “Where the Red Fern Grows,” which is the original acoustic version of his newest single. Although the acoustic version is extraordinary in itself and deserves as much praise as possible, “Red Fern” gives it an extra kick, bringing new life and attitude that drives forward not only the song in a new way, but also the story.
With the tune being about leaving behind your roots and never finding your way back home, the added Western flare and chugging snare create an entire new aesthetic of gloom while also maintaining that sense of hope. It also doesn’t take a genius to realize that Carroll’s voice is a force. He conveys a lot of emotion whether he’s going on in on a note or softly running through the verse.
