Longtime Raised Rowdy-supported artist CJ Solar released his much-anticipated Coming My Way EP last Friday, and yesterday he announced the release of a lyric video for his new single “Watered Down Whiskey” produced by Natalie Rhea Productions.
“I wanted to do a music video but with everything going on it would’ve been hard to pull off so I decided to do a lyric video and ice melting in a whiskey glass seemed like the right thing to do! My bud Charlie Berry and I wrote the song in about an hour one day when he walked in with the title and I had the guitar part… one of my favorites I’ve ever been apart of! We debuted the song live for the first time last September at the Grand Ole Opry shortly after we finished recording the EP. It felt like the perfect song for our Opry debut since it leans on old school country waltz vibes but still has my rock feel to it… I consider it a country power ballad!”
“Watered Down Whiskey” follows his first Top 10 hit, “Coming My Way,” which also peaked at #31 on the Billboard Indicator Chart. The song deals with being crushed after a breakup and no one new quite measuring up to that last relationship.
American Songwriter Magazine caught up with CJ to talk about the new EP, songwriting, his influences, and releasing new music during the Covid-19 lockdown. The feature reveals the recent heartbreak CJ felt when his first guitar teacher passed away. “The world lost one of the kindest hearts I’ve ever known this past weekend,” Solar said in a Facebook post. “I started taking guitar lessons from Stan when I was about 9 years old and when I got a little older, we played countless duo gigs together all around Baton Rouge. He taught me everything I know about guitar and a lot about life. Gonna miss you a lot Stan.”
A native of Baton Rouge, CJ grew up with Country, Southern rock and Delta blues pumping through his veins. He has shared the stage with the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chris Janson, Aaron Watson, Gary Allen, 38 Special, Hank Jr. and others. As a songwriter, CJ won a “Songs I Wish I’d Written” trophy from the Nashville Songwriter Awards for co-writing Morgan Wallen’s #1 hit “Up Down,” and Jason Aldean released “I Don’t Drink Anymore”, co-written with CJ. He has had cuts by Jerrod Niemann, Justin Moore, Jameson Rodgers and others. Taste of Country named CJ as one of their “5 Country Artists to Watch,” and Rolling Stone Country listed him as one of their “New Artists You Need To Know.”
CJ co-wrote all six cuts on Coming My Way, which follows his Get Away With It and Hard One To Turn Down EPs. He co-wrote “Watered Down Whiskey” with Charlie Berry and partnered with Smith Ahnquist, Brent Anderson, Jordan Brooker, Jacob Davis, Bob DiPiero, Mark Fuhrer, Jason Gantt, Michael Hardy, Neil Medley and Jake Mitchell on the other five songs.
